Amazon announced this Monday that it plans to invest 40 billion pounds—around $54 billion—to expand its services in Britain over the next three years. The tech giant will build new warehouses and expand existing buildings and networks.

In a rush? Here are the quick facts:

  • Amazon will invest $54 billion (£40 billion) in the UK over the next three years.
  • The tech giant will expand its services, build four new fulfillment centers, and create thousands of new jobs.
  • The British government welcomed the company’s initiative and trust in the country’s future economic development.

According to Amazon’s announcement, the new investment is expected to create thousands of new jobs. The company currently employs over 75,000 people in the UK, and the expansion will include around 4,000 new positions—2,000 at a previously announced center in Hull, and 2,000 more in Northampton— as well as new roles such as robotics technicians and mechatronic engineers.

The tech giant said that the new investment includes 4 new fulfillment centers, and the expansion of its existing 100 operations buildings across the country.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to supporting growth and productivity for the benefit of its customers, partners, and the wider economy, with the investment expected to drive innovation throughout the UK and contribute an estimated additional £38 billion to the UK’s GDP,” states the document.

The British government welcomed the new investment. “Amazon’s £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain’s basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business,” said Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. “Whether it’s cutting-edge AI or same-day delivery, this deal shows that our Plan for Change is working—bringing in investment, driving growth, and putting more money in people’s pockets.”

Earlier this year, Amazon ordered 140 new electric trucks for its operations in the UK, and also invested in solar and wind power. The tech giant bought the historic Bray Film Studios in Berkshire and is working on its development to continue investing in creative productions.

While Amazon creates new job opportunities in the UK, it is reducing its workforce in other regions. A few days ago, CEO Andy Jassy announced that Amazon will cut corporate jobs as it increasingly relies on AI technologies.
