Apple Introduces New Software, AI Updates, And More Features At WWDC

Reading time: 3 min

Apple introduced a new software design, AI updates, and other features at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this Monday. Despite these innovations, the company faces criticism for not meeting expectations for groundbreaking advancements.

In a rush? Here are the quick facts:

  • Apple introduced its latest software design, Liquid Glass, which will be available across multiple platforms and devices.
  • The new iOS 26 will roll out in fall and will include features such as Call Screening and live translation.
  • The tech giant did not meet the innovation expectations that some experts had.

The tech giant unveiled a “Liquid Glass” software design that reflects and refracts images to bring greater focus to content on screens. This update extends and adapts across all platforms and devices with iOS 26, which will be available in the fall.

“At Apple, we’ve always believed in the deep integration of hardware and software that makes interacting with technology intuitive, beautiful, and delightful,” said Alan Dye, Apple’s vice president of Human Interface Design, in the press release. “This is our broadest software design update ever.”

Apple also announced new features included in the upcoming iOS 26, such as Call Screening, in which the iPhone answers calls from unknown numbers and requests the purpose before ringing the smartphone owner with a transcription of the caller’s intention with the call. Another feature, live translation, will allow users to interact in different languages, similar to Google Meet’s speech translations announced last month.

Despite the new announcement and innovations, certain features closely resembled those already introduced by other companies, and experts criticized Apple for failing to deliver truly groundbreaking advancements.

“They went from being visionary and talking about agents before a lot of other people did, to now realizing that, at the end of the day, what they need to do is deliver on what they presented a year ago,” said Bob O’Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis Research, to Reuters.

Last year, at the WWDC 2024, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence and a Siri integration with ChatGPT. The news agency reported that Apple’s shares closed lower after the WWDC on Monday.

“In a moment in which the market questions Apple’s ability to take any sort of lead in the AI space, the announced features felt incremental at best,” said Thomas Monteiro, senior analyst at Investing.com, to Reuters. “It just seems that the clock is ticking faster every day for Apple.”
